World Environment Day

June 5th was the United Nations World Environment Day and we loved seeing the ways retailers are becoming more sustainable being put in the spotlight.
A few highlights caught our eye…

  • Supply Chain

More and more green vehicles are being used for delivery, which is ever more important given the recent growth of online shopping. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is calling on the government to encourage the take-up of green technologies and reduce emissions from goods vehicles.

  • Carbon Footprint

Adidas and Allbirds have teamed up to create a performance shoe with their lowest carbon footprint on record, while Sheep Inc. is taking carbon neutral a step further with its carbon negative products, in what it believes to be a global fashion industry first.

  • Take Back & Rental Schemes

Reuse and recycle schemes are on the rise, including big names such as George at Asda and Ikea. Meanwhile, clothes rental service My Wardrobe HQ hit the headlines when Carrie Symonds rented her wedding dress through the site. It’s fascinating to see attitudes to consumerism changing!

  • Reducing Plastic

Tom Ford is launching The Plastic Innovation Prize to encourage people to come up with alternatives for thin-film plastic, which makes up a huge amount of ocean plastic ‘leakage’. And on a smaller (but still wonderful!) scale, Asquith (one of our faves) hit their target of being plastic free by 2021, thanks to their brilliant ‘Corn, Cane, Spud’ packaging. Well done guys!
